June 03, 2025: The flood crisis in India’s northeastern states has turned severe, with the death toll climbing to 36 and more than 5.5 lakh people affected across the region.
In Assam, the worst-hit state, at least 11 people have died and over 5.15 lakh residents are grappling with floodwaters spread across 22 districts. Key rivers including the Brahmaputra, Barak, Burhidihing, Dhansiri, and Kopili are flowing above danger levels, inundating thousands of hectares of farmland.
Sikkim is facing its own crisis. A landslide in Chhaten, North Sikkim, led to the deaths of three army personnel, while six more—including a lieutenant colonel—remain missing. Rescue operations are ongoing despite continued rain. Helicopters evacuated 34 people from the area, and efforts to reach tourists stranded in Lachung and Lachen have been complicated by washed-away bridges and road closures. Over 130 tourists, including four foreign nationals, were reportedly stuck.
Mizoram has also suffered significant damage. A total of 60 homes were destroyed and at least 84 roads have been rendered impassable. A major landslide at a stone quarry in Sentezel has cut off the southern districts of Lunglei, Lawngtlai, and Siaha.
Arunachal Pradesh has reported 10 deaths. Nearly 940 people across 156 villages are affected. In Tripura, over 10,800 people have taken shelter in relief camps, while one casualty has been confirmed. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for three districts anticipating further heavy rainfall.
In Meghalaya, six people have died, while in Manipur, where rivers remain swollen after nearly a week of heavy downpours, over 56,000 residents have been impacted and more than 10,000 homes have sustained damage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla on Tuesday, assuring full central support to manage the crisis.
As weather warnings continue, authorities across the region are ramping up relief and rescue operations in a race against time and rain.
