Kerala Woman’s Death in UAE Sparks Outrage; Husband Fired After Abuse Videos Surface

The tragic death of 30-year-old Athulya Sekhar, a native of Kerala who was found dead in her Sharjah apartment on July 19, has triggered widespread shock across the Indian community in the UAE. Her husband, Satheesh Sivasankara Pillai, who worked as a site engineer in Dubai, has been dismissed from his job following disturbing revelations that surfaced after her death.

Athulya’s body was discovered in her flat located in the Rolla area of Sharjah. What made the incident even more heartbreaking for her family was the timing—it was her birthday and also the day she was set to begin a new job. Authorities are now treating her death as suspicious. Back in Kerala, a murder case has been registered against Satheesh based on a complaint filed by Athulya’s mother, who accused him of physical assault and psychological torture.

The situation took a dramatic turn when videos allegedly showing Satheesh abusing Athulya were circulated on social media. These clips, reportedly shared by Athulya with her family prior to her death, visibly show instances of physical violence and verbal harassment. The videos not only shocked her relatives but also caught the attention of Satheesh’s employer. The Dubai-based construction company responded by terminating his employment immediately, citing the gravity of the allegations and the visual evidence as primary reasons.

In a formal termination letter, the company stated that Satheesh’s actions—highlighted through news coverage and family testimony—constitute a serious offense under UAE law. The letter noted that his violent behavior contributed directly to his wife’s demise, which is being viewed as a result of sustained abuse.

Athulya’s family has also accused Satheesh of prolonged dowry harassment, claiming that since their marriage in 2014, she had been subjected to constant pressure and abuse for not bringing sufficient dowry. Despite giving 43 sovereigns of gold and a motorbike at the time of the wedding, the harassment allegedly never ceased. Authorities have now filed charges against Satheesh under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Meanwhile, Satheesh has publicly denied all accusations. Speaking from the UAE, he stated that he had no involvement in Athulya’s death and maintained that he did not believe she would take her own life. According to him, he is equally shocked and is seeking answers about what truly happened.

As the investigation continues, Athulya’s death has cast a grim spotlight on domestic abuse and dowry-related harassment among expatriate communities. The case has not only devastated her family but also stirred deep concern and anger among Indians living in the UAE, prompting renewed calls for stronger safeguards for women facing domestic violence abroad.
