Kancheepuram DSP Challenges Remand Order in Madras High Court

Kancheepuram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M. Shankar Ganesh, who was remanded by a sessions court for allegedly failing to act in a Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act case, has approached the Madras High Court seeking relief.

The Principal Sessions Court in Kancheepuram, which also functions as the special court for SC/ST cases, ordered Ganesh’s arrest and remand on Monday after taking suo motu cognisance of his delay in acting on a complaint. The case in question was filed over a month ago, but the petitioner alleged that no follow-up action was taken despite registration of an FIR.

During Monday’s proceedings, the judge noted that the officer had failed to comply with procedural requirements under the SC/ST Act and pulled him up for not submitting a status report in the matter. The complaint is linked to the “bakery violence case” in Walajabad, where Ganesh was the investigating officer.

The sessions court directed that he be held under judicial custody till September 22. However, shortly after the order, the DSP was admitted to a government hospital for treatment following complaints of high blood pressure. He remained under observation through Tuesday afternoon, even as his legal team filed a petition before the Madras High Court challenging the remand.

A senior police official confirmed that, despite his hospitalization, Ganesh remains under judicial remand until September 22, in line with the sessions court directive.
