Relief for Sharjeel Imam: Delhi Court Grants 10-Day Interim Bail for Family Wedding

In a significant development within the legal landscape of the 2020 Delhi riots cases, a local court has granted a brief window of interim relief to Sharjeel Imam. On Monday, Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai approved a 10-day bail period for Imam, allowing him to attend an upcoming family wedding. While the defense had initially petitioned for a six-week release to assist with the marriage of his younger brother and support his family, the court opted for a more restricted timeframe, spanning from March 20 to March 30.

This decision comes as the legal proceedings surrounding the communal violence in Northeast Delhi continue to move through various stages of the judicial system. Sharjeel Imam, who has been in custody since early 2020, is facing charges related to the “larger conspiracy” allegedly behind the riots that resulted in widespread property damage and loss of life. The court’s order for temporary release follows a pattern of recent judicial activity in this specific investigation; earlier this month, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to five other individuals accused in the same conspiracy case, marking a shift in the status of several high-profile detainees.

The interim bail is strictly conditional, requiring Imam to return to custody immediately following the conclusion of the 10-day period. This temporary reprieve serves as a rare break in a legal saga that has spanned over four years, during which the prosecution and defense have traded complex arguments regarding the nature of the 2020 protests and the subsequent violence. As the trial for the broader conspiracy case remains ongoing, this ruling highlights the court’s willingness to balance the gravity of the charges with the personal and familial obligations of the accused.
