A quiet Sunday morning in Raulgaon village turned into a scene of devastating chaos as a powerful explosion ripped through the SBL Energy Limited factory, a prominent manufacturer of industrial and mining explosives. The blast, which occurred in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district, has claimed the lives of at least 17 workers and left 18 others with serious injuries, triggering a massive emergency response that has drawn attention from the highest offices in the country.
The tragedy unfolded early in the day at the facility, where the sheer force of the detonation caused significant destruction within the premises. Rescue operations were launched on a war footing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arriving on-site to navigate the wreckage. Experts from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) and the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) are also on the ground, both to assist in the recovery and to begin the technical work of uncovering how such a catastrophic failure occurred.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who described the event as “tragic and unfortunate,” has been personally overseeing the state’s response. While expressing his condolences to the families of the 17 deceased workers, he confirmed that the 18 injured individuals have been rushed to hospitals in Nagpur for specialized treatment. In a move to provide immediate relief, the state government has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives. Furthermore, the Chief Minister clarified that SBL Energy Limited would be required to extend additional financial assistance to those affected by the disaster.
The gravity of the incident was felt nationally, with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life. The Prime Minister has sanctioned an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), assuring the public that local authorities are being provided all necessary resources to handle the aftermath.
Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who is closely monitoring the situation, has vowed that the investigation will not be a mere formality. He emphasized that strict accountability will be enforced once the inquiry identifies the parties responsible for the explosion.
