Tragedy in Dehradun: Family Alleges Harassment in Medical Student’s Death

The medical community in Dehradun is reeling following the death of Tanvi, a 23-year-old postgraduate student whose life ended under circumstances that have sparked a heated debate over workplace pressure and institutional accountability. Tanvi, an MS Ophthalmology student originally from Ambala, was found unresponsive in her car in the Patel Nagar area late at night, leaving behind a grieving family and a series of troubling questions.

Tanvi began her residency at a local private medical college in September 2023. While her initial evaluations were positive, her father, Lalit Mohan, claims her environment shifted drastically following a change in departmental leadership late last year. According to the family’s formal complaint, the new Head of Department (HoD) allegedly subjected Tanvi to a pattern of mental, academic, and financial distress. What was once a promising academic journey reportedly turned into a struggle for survival. Mr. Mohan alleges that his daughter was frequently threatened with poor grades, a tactic that placed her under immense psychological strain. Despite his attempts to intervene by speaking directly with the department head on several occasions, the family claims no resolution was ever offered.

The timeline leading up to the discovery of her body suggests a frantic night for the family. Tanvi had been in contact with her father for nearly an hour on the night of the incident, later texting at 11:15 pm to say she would be home by midnight. When her phone went silent shortly after, her father rushed from Ambala to Dehradun to search for her. The search ended tragically on a road near the hospital, where the family spotted Tanvi’s locked vehicle. After breaking a window to reach her, they rushed her to Mahant Indiresh Hospital, but it was too late; doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

While the police have registered a case against the HoD based on the father’s allegations, the hospital administration has offered a different perspective. Senior officials at the institution noted that Tanvi had been struggling with mental health issues for some time. They stated that the student was undergoing treatment for psychological distress and that her family was actively involved in her medical care—details the hospital claims were already on record.

Local authorities are now caught between these two narratives. The investigation is currently multi-faceted, with detectives analyzing post-mortem results, call logs, and Tanvi’s academic records to determine if professional harassment served as a catalyst for the tragedy. This case has once again cast a shadow over the high-pressure environment of medical internships and residencies in India. As the probe continues, the focus remains on whether the “hazing” or “toxic” culture often whispered about in medical corridors played a role in the loss of a young doctor’s life.
