Tragedy Near Markapuram: Fiery Collision Claims 13 Lives, Sparks Urgent Safety Debate

The early hours of Thursday, March 26, 2026, brought a horrific scene to the Rayavaram stretch near Markapuram as a private sleeper bus and a gravel-laden tipper truck collided, sparking a massive fire that claimed the lives of 14 people. The accident, which occurred between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM, saw both vehicles completely gutted by flames within minutes. Most of the victims, who were traveling from Jagtial in Telangana toward Nellore, were reportedly asleep at the back of the bus and were unable to escape the rapidly spreading fire.

The impact occurred near a stone quarry on a sharp bend. Initial reports and eyewitness accounts suggest the bus may have veered into the opposite lane, though the bus driver—who survived with injuries—claimed the steering mechanism had jammed. While approximately ten passengers seated near the front managed to break windows or use the front exit to escape, those in the rear became trapped. Local residents and emergency teams from Markapuram rushed to the site, but the intensity of the blaze, fueled by the truck’s diesel tank, made rescue nearly impossible for those stuck deep inside the cabin.

This tragedy has reignited a fierce debate over the “All India Tourist Permit” loophole. The bus involved, operated by Harikrishna Travels, was registered in Arunachal Pradesh despite operating almost exclusively in the Telugu states. This is a common practice among private operators to exploit significantly lower taxation—roughly ₹60,000 annually in the Northeast compared to nearly ₹8 lakh in Andhra Pradesh. More critically, it allows operators to bypass the stringent physical fitness inspections required by local authorities, as these vehicles rarely return to their home state for mandatory safety checks.

In the wake of the crash, the Andhra Pradesh government has established a command control room at the Markapuram RDO office and released helpline numbers (6304285613, 9985733999) to assist grieving families. Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a full-scale inquiry, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

This incident follows a disturbing pattern of bus fires in the region, including the Kurnool tragedy in late 2025. Safety experts point to dangerous modifications in private sleeper buses—such as adding extra berths that block emergency exits and using highly flammable interior materials—as the primary reasons why these collisions so frequently turn into death traps. As investigations continue, the focus remains on whether the state will finally enforce stricter oversight on interstate registrations to prevent another pre-dawn journey from ending in smoke.
